Broken Keys

Yesterday AAA Road Side Service called me and asked if I could remove broken keys from an ignition. This got me thinking. I wonder how many people know we can remove the broken part of the key from inside a keyhole. We have special tools that move the tumblers out of the way and grab the broken key tip so it can be removed. We can also take two halves of a broken key and make a new key. Usually buy putting the broken key back together in our duplicator and coping the key, but we can also decode the broken key and cut a new one with the same cuts to match your old key. There have been a few times when I had to take the lock apart to get the broken parts out.  I have removed tan bark (from school locks), plastic, dirt & grime, and even the broken tip from a pair of scissors out of a Toyota ignition once. Having a locksmith come out to remove debris from a lock, or fix a broke key often cost less, and is less hassle, than replacing the lock, and it doesn’t take very long to do.
