Dodge keys stopped working?

Did your Dodge keys stopped working?  It’s not limited to Dodge transponder keys, but I have seen a pattern over the years: keys that were programmed and suddenly are no longer recognized by the vehicle.

See our blog on transponder keys for more information on chipped keys.

A dealership might tell you that a vehicle won’t forget which keys are registered in its computer, but contrary to design, a set of keys can spontaneously fall out of memory. When an encrypted key that is registered in the vehicle’s memory suddenly become unlisted in the car’s ECU (Electronic Control Unit), the car has effectively “forgotten” the key.

Some OEM (original equipment from the manufacturer) and after-market keys use batteries. If the batteries go dead, the keys will turn but the car may not start, or the remote buttons on the key might stop working. Occasionally car keys will stop turning in an ignition due to being worn down, or poor ignition design (see our write up on Honda Ignitions). These are different than a car forgetting a key.

Forgetting a key will result in the car’s security system interrupting the start sequence and the vehicle’s anti-theft system keeping the motor from starting. A quick fix is to have the keys re-programmed into the car’s memory, which can be accomplished on site, while you wait. Alternately, new keys can be cut and added to your vehicle’s system if needed.

Whether your key’s batteries need changing or the cuts are worn out, an ignition fails or the car loses its link to your key’s transponder, we can give you an estimate on repairs right over the phone. Just give us a call with your vehicle’s year, make, and model and we will be happy to assist you.
